What is My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic about?

Lauren Faust set out to make a cartoon for girls that didn't condescend to them, and the result became one of the more unexpected cultural phenomena of the 2010s. The show follows Twilight Sparkle, a bookish unicorn who relocates to Ponyville and gradually learns that friendship matters more than academic achievement, along with five companions who each embody a different virtue. That description makes it sound like homework, but the actual experience is warmer and funnier than the premise implies.

What surprised people, including a lot of adults who had no business watching a Hub Network cartoon, was how well-constructed the writing was in the early seasons. Faust drew on her background with shows like The Powerpuff Girls and brought genuine wit to what could have been pure product. The character dynamics are distinct and consistent, the humor lands without relying on snark, and the show has a sincere emotional register without tipping into saccharine manipulation. It is, plainly, a well-made show. The later seasons, after Faust departed, diluted some of that. The formula becomes more visible, the stakes inflate in ways that don't always pay off, and nine seasons is a long run for any animated property to maintain its original energy.

Critically the show earned real respect, not just the patronizing praise reserved for children's media, and it developed a devoted adult fanbase called "bronies" that generated enormous amounts of fan work and became a genuine internet subculture. That phenomenon attracted as much sociological commentary as the show itself, which says something about how much projection surrounded it.

At its best, in roughly the first four seasons, this show does something genuinely difficult: it depicts female friendship without rivalry, pettiness, or competition as the default mode, and it does so entertainingly. That Twilight Sparkle eventually becomes a princess with wings is almost beside the point.

Nine seasons and 221 episodes is a genuinely long run for any animated series, and by the time Friendship Is Magic wrapped in 2019, it had accomplished just about everything it set out to do. The show's creative team, led originally by Lauren Faust, had built a surprisingly rich world out of what was essentially a toy commercial premise, and the narrative arcs for the Mane Six had been developed about as far as they reasonably could go. The finale gave the characters proper send-offs, which strongly suggests this was a planned conclusion rather than anything abrupt.

There's also the commercial context to consider. Hasbro, which owns the My Little Pony property, had been developing a theatrical film (released in 2017) and was clearly thinking about how to refresh the franchise rather than simply continue it indefinitely. The "G5" generation of My Little Pony content was already in development, which meant winding down Friendship Is Magic was partly a strategic decision to clear the way for something new. You don't relaunch a brand while the previous iteration is still running.

The show also outlasted its own cultural moment to some degree. The "brony" phenomenon that made Friendship Is Magic a genuine pop culture conversation piece had peaked well before the final season, and while the core kids audience remained, the unusual cross-demographic attention the show once attracted had faded. Ending on season 9 let the show exit with its reputation intact rather than grinding on until the premise was exhausted.
