What is Evil about?

Katja Herbers plays Kristen Bouchard, a forensic psychologist with four daughters, a mountain-climber husband who's never around, and a growing inability to explain away everything she's seeing on the job. Her colleagues are David Acosta, a priest-in-training with his own complicated faith, and Ben, a tech expert who's the group's dedicated skeptic. Together they're hired assessors for the Catholic Church, dispatched to investigate cases of supposed possession, prophecy, and demonic interference. If that sounds like a procedural with a supernatural twist, it is, but the Kings (the team behind The Good Wife) are doing something weirder and more personal with the format than that description suggests.

The tone is where the show earns its reputation. It's genuinely unsettling in places, funny in others, and willing to let both registers coexist in the same scene. Michael Emerson plays the villain Leland Townsend as a figure of low-key, bureaucratic evil, the kind of man who signs documents and attends meetings and is somehow more frightening for it. The show takes seriously the possibility that the supernatural is real while also taking seriously the possibility that it isn't, and it holds that tension for four seasons without fully releasing it in either direction. That's harder to do than it sounds.

Critics were enthusiastic, especially in the early seasons, and audiences who found it tended to be loyal. It started on CBS, moved to Paramount+, and felt like a slightly different show in each environment, more willing to get strange once it wasn't competing for broadcast ratings. The final season drew some criticism for leaving threads unresolved, which is fair, though the show was always more interested in accumulating unease than in providing answers.

Evil shares DNA with The X-Files in its investigator-of-the-week structure and its ongoing mythology, but the Kings are more interested in domestic pressure than in government conspiracy. Kristen's household, with four increasingly unsettling daughters and a career that keeps pulling her toward darkness, gives the show a grounded anxiety that most supernatural procedurals skip entirely. The eldest daughter Lynn, quietly radicalized over the course of the series, ends up being one of the show's more quietly disturbing threads, and the fact that she does so mostly in the background of family dinner scenes says a lot about what kind of show this actually is.

Evil was always a bit of an odd fit for CBS. Created by Robert and Michelle King, it leaned into genuinely unsettling horror, moral ambiguity, and serialized mythology in ways that sat uneasily alongside the network's traditional procedural audience. When CBS moved it to Paramount+ after its first two seasons, the show actually seemed to find more freedom, and the back half of its run got stranger and more ambitious. But streaming shows, even well-reviewed ones, eventually face the same question: is the audience big enough to justify another season?

After four seasons and 50 episodes, the Kings brought the show to a close on their own terms, more or less. There is no reliable indication this was a cancellation. The creative team had been threading a long-form story about faith, evil, and institutional corruption, and by the time the fourth season aired in the summer of 2024, they appear to have concluded that story. The Kings have talked publicly about having an endpoint in mind, which tracks with how the show's mythology built toward something rather than sprawling indefinitely.

It is also worth noting that summer 2024 was not a strong moment for Paramount+ as a platform. The streamer was under financial pressure and rethinking its content strategy broadly. Even if the Kings wanted to continue, the economics may have made a fifth season difficult to greenlight. Whether it was creative closure, platform reality, or some combination of both, four seasons feels like a reasonable run for a show this idiosyncratic, and the ending seems to have been planned rather than forced.
