What is Elite about?

Las Encinas is a private school where everyone is beautiful, everyone is hiding something, and somebody always ends up dead. Elite arrived on Netflix in 2018 as a Spanish teen drama with a murder mystery at its center, and for its first couple of seasons it was genuinely hard to stop watching. The show understood that its audience wanted glamour and scandal in roughly equal measure, and it delivered both without much apology.

What made it work early on was the tension between the class conflict in its premise and the pulpy soap mechanics it used to explore that conflict. The scholarship kids arriving at Las Encinas were not just fish out of water; they were catalysts for the school's darker secrets. The show was explicitly political in a way that most of its glossy European competitors were not, even if it routinely undermined that politics by making every character, rich or poor, equally capable of terrible behavior. Netflix has shown in recent years that it will extend international shows that hold onto subscriber engagement, and Elite clearly held on long enough to reach eight seasons, which is unusual for almost any streaming drama. But there is a natural ceiling on how many times you can reset a high school murder mystery with a fresh ensemble, and the show seems to have reached it. Wrapping at season eight reads like a mutual recognition, between the creators and the platform, that the concept had run its course rather than a network pulling the plug mid-story.
