Pretty Little Liars ran for seven seasons on ABC Family, which tells you something about both its ambition and its limitations. The premise is genuinely good: four teenage girls in a wealthy Pennsylvania town start receiving anonymous threats from someone who knows everything about them, right around the time their missing friend's body turns up. The mystery of who killed Alison DiLaurentis, and who has been tormenting these girls ever since, is the engine that keeps the whole thing moving. At its best, the show is genuinely creepy and surprisingly addictive.

The tone is heightened in a way that works in its favor early on. This is a world of perfect hair and impossible houses where everyone is hiding something, and the show leans into that artificiality rather than apologizing for it. There is real style here, borrowed partly from soap opera and partly from slasher films, and the four leads are better than the material often requires them to be. Troian Bellisario in particular does serious work with Spencer, who could easily have been a stock overachiever type. The show also deserves credit for treating Emily's storyline as a gay teenager with more care than most teen dramas of its era managed.

The problem is that seven seasons is too long for a mystery that keeps moving the goalposts. The show accumulated so many red herrings, fake-out reveals, and retconned explanations that by the later seasons, fan frustration was palpable even among devoted viewers. The final reveal of "A" satisfied almost no one. Critics were always a bit cool on it, acknowledging the guilty-pleasure energy while noting that coherent plotting was never its strength, but audiences during its peak years were genuinely obsessed with it, which mattered more.

What the show did better than its imitators was create a specific social texture around its central mystery. The liars' friendship, fractious and loyal in equal measure, felt real enough that you actually cared whether they survived the latest escalation. The "A" game could be exhausting, but the four girls at the center of it rarely were.

Marlene King had signaled well before the final season that the story of Spencer, Hanna, Aria, Emily, and their tormentor "A" was heading toward a conclusion, and the seventh season was structured as a deliberate sendoff rather than a desperate scramble to wrap things up.

The ratings tell part of the story too. The show was a genuine phenomenon in its early years, drawing massive numbers for what was then ABC Family, particularly among young women. But like most mystery-driven dramas that extend their run across many seasons, the audience thinned out as the central mystery kept expanding and the reveals kept coming. By the later seasons, viewership had dropped considerably from those early peaks, which made ending on planned terms a cleaner outcome than risking cancellation or a prolonged decline.

There's also the simple matter of the story being told. The "A" mystery had been stretched and rebooted more than once, and by season seven the writers were clearly in conclusion mode. The show had made ABC Family, later rebranded as Freeform, a genuine destination for young adult content, and ending with some dignity intact made more sense than grinding on. A spinoff, "The Perfectionists," followed, which itself suggests the network saw the ending less as a loss and more as an opportunity to reset.
