What is Cobra Kai about?

Cobra Kai started life as a YouTube Premium original, which tells you something about how little anyone expected it to matter. Then it landed on Netflix in 2020, and suddenly everyone was watching it, including people who had never particularly cared about The Karate Kid. The premise sounds like a nostalgia cash-grab, and it is, partly, but the show does something smarter with that material than it has any right to do.

The best thing here is William Zabka. Johnny Lawrence was the villain of the 1984 film, and the show spends six seasons unpacking what it means to be that guy decades later, broke and bitter and convinced he was robbed of something. Zabka plays him with real specificity, finding the comedy in Johnny's complete inability to understand the modern world while never letting you forget the damage he causes. Ralph Macchio's Daniel, meanwhile, gets to be genuinely flawed rather than the hero by default, and the show is at its best when both men are wrong at the same time. The teenage ensemble is hit and miss. Xolo Maridueña carries his storylines. Others, particularly in the later seasons, tip the show into a soap opera register that strains credibility.

Audiences loved it more than critics did, and that gap says something true about the show. The IMDb score is high and the Netflix viewership numbers were enormous, while critical reception was warmer than expected but still a bit cautious. The consensus settled around "better than it should be," which is fair but also slightly condescending to what the writers actually pulled off in the first two seasons. Later seasons inflate the stakes and add antagonists until the plot machinery starts to groan.

Six seasons is probably one too many. The show finds a comfortable groove around seasons two and three and then spends the remaining half of its run trying to justify its own continuation. But even when it is spinning its wheels, it keeps finding small character moments that work, which is more than most legacy sequels can say.

Cobra Kai always had a finish line in mind. The showrunners Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg built the series as a continuation of a specific story, one rooted in the original Karate Kid mythology, and that story had a natural endpoint. By the time season six arrived, the main arcs, Daniel and Johnny's rivalry turned reluctant brotherhood, Miguel's journey, the fate of both dojos, had run their course. A show like this can only delay its conclusion for so long before the mythology starts collapsing under its own weight.

The numbers supported letting it end on its own terms rather than dragging it out. Cobra Kai had been a genuine hit for Netflix after the streamer acquired it from YouTube Premium, and it consistently ranked among the platform's most-watched titles in its earlier seasons. But six seasons and 65 episodes is a substantial run for any drama, and audience engagement with long-running continuations tends to thin over time, even for beloved properties. Netflix, for its part, has shown a willingness to let creator-driven shows conclude gracefully when the creative team signals they are done, rather than forcing renewals that nobody wants.

The final season also brought back original Karate Kid cast members and leaned heavily into the franchise's history, which felt like a deliberate send-off rather than a setup for more. The creators clearly knew where the ending was and chose to go there. That is increasingly rare in television, and it is worth recognizing. Cobra Kai ended because the people who made it decided it was finished, and they were probably right.
