What is Black Books about?

Black Books is a British sitcom about a bookshop that barely sells books, run by a man who actively despises customers. Dylan Moran plays Bernard Black, a drunk curmudgeon whose primary talents are insulting people and finding new ways to avoid work. Bill Bailey is Manny, his eternally patient assistant, and Tamsin Greig is Fran, a woman of mysterious employment who exists mainly to absorb Bernard's abuse and occasional tenderness. The comedy is wordy and strange in a way that feels specifically British. Bernard's complaints spiral into philosophical rants about nothing. Moran's screenplay leans into character comedy over plot mechanics, which means sometimes episodes meander, but when they work, the dialogue is sharper than almost anything on television at the time.

Critics loved it immediately and audiences were smaller but devoted. It never became a mainstream hit, which probably bothered nobody involved. The show ended after three seasons and 18 episodes while it was still good, which is rarer than it should be. Black Books has aged well partly because it ignores trends and partly because its jokes about books and wine and friendship have nothing to do with topicality. It stands alone.
