Predictive Logic Analysis

That '90s Show has been cancelled. The series will not continue, and Season 3 is not in development.

What is That '90s Show about?

That '90s Show exists mostly to give Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp a reason to return to their basement. The premise is simple: Eric and Donna's teenage daughter Leia spends summer 1995 in Point Place, Wisconsin, hanging around with a new crop of friends while her grandparents Red and Kitty hover nearby. It's a nostalgia play built on the bones of the original That '70s Show, and it works best when Smith and Rupp are on screen doing what they've always done—playing the exasperated, bewildered parents who somehow make it all work anyway.

The show understands its own limitations. It doesn't try to recreate the chemistry of the original cast or pretend the new generation of characters are anything more than vehicles for jokes about how different the '90s were from the '70s. The humor is gentle and safe, heavy on dated references and fish-out-of-water moments. There's an odd, small-scale quality to it that keeps expectations manageable. Nobody is trying to do anything particularly ambitious here. The basement scenes have the feel of old friends reuniting, which is both the show's greatest strength and its most obvious limitation.

Critics and audiences responded with tepid indifference. The show landed a 6.3 on IMDb, which suggests people found it harmless if unmemorable. The cast of newcomers never quite found their footing, and the writing rarely gave them reasons to. Netflix kept it running for two seasons across less than two years before cancelling it, a pattern suggesting the show couldn't hold attention once the novelty of seeing the old faces wore off. Viewers tuning in for genuine nostalgia got what they expected. Everyone else had little reason to stick around.

What separates That '90s Show from most legacy revivals is how honest it is about being a side project. It doesn't demand you care about its new characters or treat their problems as serious. It just asks you to enjoy Red being curmudgeonly and Kitty being well-meaning, and if that's enough for you, fine. If it isn't, the show won't convince you otherwise.

Why was That '90s Show cancelled?

That '90s Show arrived on Netflix in early 2023 with the built-in advantage of nostalgia and a connection to a beloved predecessor, yet it couldn't sustain viewer interest through a second season. The show's rapid decline mirrors a familiar pattern on Netflix, where strong initial curiosity doesn't translate into lasting engagement. Whatever audience showed up for the premiere of the That '70s Show spinoff had largely moved on by the time the second season wrapped in August 2024, less than eighteen months after launch. A 6.3 rating on IMDb suggests the show was broadly dismissed by those who watched it, and viewership metrics almost certainly reflected a sharp drop-off between seasons, the kind of trajectory that makes renewal mathematics straightforward for the streamer.

The show's cancellation also reflects Netflix's shift toward protecting its budget allocation. The streamer has become ruthless about cutting loose shows that don't demonstrate both immediate popularity and staying power, particularly comedies, which have become harder to break through on the platform. A sitcom spinoff, however cleverly packaged, doesn't have the built-in franchise momentum of a drama series or limited event show. After two seasons and 26 episodes, Netflix determined that whatever audience remained wasn't large enough or engaged enough to justify the cost of continuing, especially when a third season would likely produce even dimmer returns.
