What is Squid Game about?

Squid Game arrived in September 2021 and became, almost immediately, one of the most-watched things Netflix had ever put out. The premise is brutal and simple: desperately indebted people compete in children's games where losing means death, and a prize worth billions waits for whoever survives. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk had been trying to get the project made for a decade, and that decade of frustration is visible in how sharply the show treats financial desperation, class shame, and the particular cruelty of systems that dress up exploitation as fair competition.

The first season earned that attention. It was viscerally violent but also surprisingly patient, taking time with characters like Gi-hun and the old man Il-nam in ways that gave the carnage actual weight. The candy-colored sets and childhood-game framing created a visual dissonance that felt genuinely thought through, not just stylistically convenient. Lee Jung-jae was excellent in the lead, carrying a character who is hapless and decent in roughly equal measure.

The show swept through awards circuits and broke viewership records, and critics largely celebrated it as a sharp piece of social satire wearing genre clothing. Audiences agreed in staggering numbers. The more interesting question, and the one that lingered after Seasons 2 and 3 arrived, is whether the expansion served the story or simply served the franchise. The second and third seasons brought new players, a broader mythology around the games' organization, and higher narrative ambitions, and reactions were noticeably more divided. The IMDb score settling at 7.9 across the full run, strong but not exceptional for a show with this cultural footprint, suggests the later seasons spent some of what the first one earned.

What remains constant across all three seasons is the show's interest in how ordinary people behave when the rules collapse and survival is the only prize on offer. Some characters disappoint you. Some surprise you. That tension is what the show is actually about, and it holds even when the plotting around it gets unwieldy.

Squid Game was always conceived as a finite story. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk had spent years developing the original concept and was explicit, even before season two arrived, that he had a specific ending in mind for Gi-hun's arc. This was never a show built to run indefinitely on audience goodwill. It had a beginning, a middle, and a place it was always heading.

The three-season structure reflects that intention. Netflix, understandably, wanted to extend the franchise as long as possible given that season one became the most-watched series in the platform's history, but the shape of the story across seasons two and three suggests a writer who knew where he was going rather than one stalling for time. By the end of season three, the narrative questions the show had raised were answered, the central character's journey was complete, and there was simply nowhere left to go that wouldn't dilute what came before.

An IMDb score of 7.9 across the full run is respectable, though noticeably lower than the extraordinary reception season one received. Some audience fatigue and mixed responses to the later seasons were probably inevitable given the impossibly high expectations set in 2021. But that modest dip in enthusiasm didn't end the show. Hwang Dong-hyuk did, by finishing the story he set out to tell.
