What is Squid Game about?

Squid Game arrived in September 2021 and became, almost immediately, a cultural event that Netflix had never quite seen before. Hundreds of desperate people competing in children's games for a life-changing cash prize, with elimination meaning death. The premise is simple enough to explain in a sentence and visceral enough to keep you watching through the night. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk had been developing the idea for years before it got made, and that long gestation shows in the first season's confidence. It knows exactly what it wants to say about debt, desperation, and the way economic precarity can make people consent to their own destruction.

The tone is what sets it apart from the wave of survival-game fiction it superficially resembles. It is brutal but not nihilistic, at least not at first. The color palette is garish and childlike, pastel pink guards against candy-colored sets, which makes the violence land harder rather than softer. The show is Korean-language, and the specificity of its social anxieties, loan sharks, financial ruin, a system that offers the appearance of fairness, gives it weight that a more generic version would lack. Lee Jung-jae is very good at making Gi-hun's moral confusion feel real rather than scripted.

The reception was, by any measure, extraordinary. It became the most-watched Netflix series at the time of its release, sparked months of discourse, and won Lee Jung-jae a Screen Actors Guild award. Critics largely agreed that the first season was tight and purposeful. Seasons two and three, arriving years later, received a more divided response, with some viewers finding the expanded story and new characters worthwhile and others feeling the show had lost the contained urgency that made the original so striking.

The later seasons lean harder into plot mechanics and a broader conspiracy, which is a reasonable choice but a different show from the one that hooked people in 2021. What the first season understood, and what occasionally gets buried later, is that the games themselves are almost secondary. The real subject is the specific texture of humiliation that comes with being broke.

Squid Game was always conceived as a finite story. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk had spent years developing the original concept and was explicit, even before season two arrived, that he had a specific ending in mind for Gi-hun's arc. This was never a show built to run indefinitely on audience goodwill. It had a beginning, a middle, and a place it was always heading.

The three-season structure reflects that intention. Netflix, understandably, wanted to extend the franchise as long as possible given that season one became the most-watched series in the platform's history, but the shape of the story across seasons two and three suggests a writer who knew where he was going rather than one stalling for time. By the end of season three, the narrative questions the show had raised were answered, the central character's journey was complete, and there was simply nowhere left to go that wouldn't dilute what came before.

An IMDb score of 7.9 across the full run is respectable, though noticeably lower than the extraordinary reception season one received. Some audience fatigue and mixed responses to the later seasons were probably inevitable given the impossibly high expectations set in 2021. But that modest dip in enthusiasm didn't end the show. Hwang Dong-hyuk did, by finishing the story he set out to tell.
