What is Sherlock Holmes about?

Jeremy Brett's decade-long run as Sherlock Holmes for ITV remains the performance that most serious fans of Arthur Conan Doyle's stories measure every other adaptation against. That is not hypethat is just what happened. Brett brought a physical intensity and a strange, mercurial quality to the role that no one before or since has quite replicated: the sudden stillness, the theatrical gestures, the way he made Holmes feel genuinely alien rather than merely eccentric.

The show was produced with real fidelity to the original stories, and for stretches of its run that fidelity paid off handsomely. The Granada productions are handsome, unhurried, and treat the source material as something worth preserving rather than updating. Edward Hardwicke's Watson, who joined from the second season onward, is warm and quietly dignified, very much the capable companion of the stories rather than the bumbling sidekick that earlier film versions had made fashionable. The two actors found a genuine rapport.

Critical reception was strong throughout, and the show built a devoted audience on both sides of the Atlantic, including American viewers who watched via PBS. It holds an 8.7 on IMDb from tens of thousands of voters decades after its final episode, which says something about the loyalty it still inspires.

The later seasons carry some sadness with them. Brett's health deteriorated visibly on screen, and the episodes made toward the end of the run feel different in texture and energy from the earlier ones. Whether that diminishes the series depends on how you look at it. For some viewers it makes those final cases feel haunted in a way that is its own kind of affecting.

Jeremy Brett's portrayal of Sherlock Holmes for Granada Television became the definitive screen version of the character, and the series ran for a decade across seven seasons before concluding in 1994. By that point, the show had worked through the vast majority of Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories, and the well was simply running dry. There are only so many canonical Holmes tales, and Granada had adapted most of the best-known ones. That natural exhaustion of source material was probably the single biggest factor in bringing things to a close.

The other unavoidable reality was Brett's declining health. He suffered from serious heart problems throughout the later seasons, and his condition visibly affected production. The show had to work around his limitations, and some of the later episodes feel constrained because of it. Brett died in September 1995, just over a year after the final episode aired, which puts the ending of the series in a fairly clear light. This was not a show that got cancelled or lost its audience. It simply reached the end of what it could reasonably do, given both the finite source material and the physical toll on its lead actor.

The ratings and critical reception remained strong throughout. An IMDb score of 8.7 reflects an audience that still holds the series in genuine affection. Granada did not pull the plug on a struggling show. The series ended because the circumstances, the stories available, Brett's health, the natural lifespan of the project, made continuing impractical. It went out with its reputation intact, which is rarer than it should be.
