That structural generosity is what kept audiences hooked across forty-seven episodes.

The tone is warmly nostalgic but not entirely toothless. Fellowes, who wrote every episode himself, clearly loves this world and is not interested in condemning it, which bothered some critics who wanted a sharper accounting of class and privilege. What you get instead is a show that notices the cruelty of rigid hierarchy while remaining fond of the people enforcing it. That is a genuinely strange position to hold for six years, and the show holds it with more consistency than the criticism suggests. The melodrama can tip into soap opera, and the later seasons leaned harder on convenient plot resolutions, but the casting keeps even the shakier storylines watchable. Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern ground the family scenes, and Jim Carter's Carson is one of the better portraits on British television of a man who has organized his entire identity around a single household and cannot imagine existing outside it.

Critical reception was warmest in the early seasons. The show won numerous BAFTAs and Emmy Awards, and the first two seasons in particular drew strong reviews for their handling of World War One and the social upheaval that followed. By seasons four and five, some critics had grown impatient with the show's reluctance to actually change anything, noting that Downton had a habit of gesturing toward transformation before quietly restoring the status quo. Audiences were less bothered: the ratings remained enormous in the UK, and its American run on PBS Masterpiece turned it into a Sunday-night institution.

What sets it apart from other heritage dramas is the unashamed pleasure it takes in its own soap opera mechanics. A show like The Crown uses period detail to examine power with some analytical distance. Downton is not trying to do that. It wants you to care whether Mary marries the right man and whether Carson approves. That narrower ambition turns out to be its strength, and Maggie Smith's Violet Crawley, delivering acidic observations about the modern world from beneath increasingly elaborate hats, is one of those supporting performances that could carry any scene she walked into.

Viewership in the UK had softened from its early peak, when it was a genuine national event drawing audiences well above ten million. By series six those numbers had come down, though the show remained solidly popular by most standards. More relevant was probably the international picture: Downton had become a phenomenon on PBS in the United States and sold widely around the world, and walking away while it was still respected was a smarter long-term play than overstaying its welcome.

What followed the finale, of course, were two theatrical films, which tells you something about how the ending was managed. This was not a show that got cancelled or ran out of story in a messy way. Fellowes wrapped it deliberately, kept the brand intact, and the movies confirmed that the farewell was calculated rather than forced. Downton Abbey ended because its creator decided it should, and the evidence suggests he was right.
