At its center, Asa Butterfield plays Otis with a particular kind of rigid awkwardness that never tips into caricature, while Ncuti Gatwa as his best friend Eric gives arguably the more generous, charismatic performance of the two. Gillian Anderson as Otis's sex therapist mother Jean is a consistent pleasure, playing a woman whose professional confidence is completely at odds with her personal chaos. The ensemble is unusually large and the show earns real affection for characters like Aimee Lou Wood's Aimee, who in later seasons gets some of the series' most thoughtful material around trauma and recovery.

Critics responded warmly from the start, praising its frank treatment of sex and sexuality alongside its genuine emotional intelligence. Audiences followed in large numbers. The later seasons drew more mixed feelings, as the show expanded its world and its themes in ways that felt ambitious but occasionally overstuffed. Season four in particular, which relocates several characters to a new school, reads like the show trying to refresh itself past its natural endpoint.

What the show does best, and what it does more consistently than most of its competitors, is take its teenage characters' inner lives seriously without turning them into miniature adults delivering speeches. Even when the writing overreaches, the cast keeps pulling it back to something recognizably human.

Sex Education ended because its creators chose to end it, and that was probably the right call. Showrunner Laurie Nunn had a specific story to tell about Otis, Maeve, and the students of Moordale (and later Cavendish), and four seasons felt like a natural stopping point rather than a place where the show was running out of road and being pushed off it.

Netflix rarely kills a show that is performing well, and Sex Education was one of the streamer's genuine breakout hits, drawing strong global viewership and consistent critical praise across its run. An 8.2 on IMDb after four seasons suggests the audience stayed engaged rather than drifting away, which means this was not a cancellation dressed up as a finale. When Netflix lets a show go out on its own terms, it usually means the creative team asked to wrap things up rather than being told to.

The fourth season itself had a valedictory quality to it, moving the characters into new settings and pushing toward resolution rather than new complications. Nunn and her writers clearly knew where the ending was and built toward it. That kind of intentional closure is increasingly rare in streaming television, where the temptation to extend a popular property indefinitely is enormous. Sex Education resisted that, and the show is better for it.
