What is Obliterated about?

Obliterated is a Netflix action comedy that takes the premise of elite soldiers cutting loose after a successful mission and runs with it. The setup is straightforward: drunk heroes trying to handle the next crisis when they're still hungover. When the show commits to the premise rather than fighting it, when it accepts that these are competent professionals acting incompetent because they're genuinely sloshed, it has moments of real fun. Audiences gave Obliterated a middling reception. The IMDb score of 6.8 suggests people who watched it found it diverting enough, and Netflix audiences clicked into it at launch, but not enough to sustain interest or justify another season. Critics were scattered, neither embracing it as a clever subversion nor dismissing it outright. The show arrived, had its moment, and disappeared before anyone had to argue about what it was really trying to be.

In the current ecosystem of action comedies, Obliterated sits somewhere between the sincerity of shows like The Old Guard and the parody of something like Arrowhead. It doesn't quite have the emotional core the good ones carry or the commitment to absurdism the great ones achieve. Eight episodes is all it got, which for a show that hinges its entire appeal on a single joke is probably about the right amount of time to make that joke, laugh at it, and move on.
