What is Lockwood & Co. about?

Lockwood & Co. exists in that sweet spot where a show is fun enough to binge and smart enough that you don't feel bad about it afterward. Three teenagers run a scrappy supernatural detective agency in an alternate London where ghosts are real, dangerous, and largely ignored by the authorities. The setup is straightforward, but what matters is that the show knows how to use its 45-minute episodes to build cases that are genuinely creepy, solve them in ways that make sense, and let the characters breathe between scares.

The tone walks a careful line. It's not trying to be grim or self-important about ghost hunting, but it's not a comedy either. There are jokes, mostly from George, the agency's research-obsessed member, but the horror elements have real teeth. Lucy Carlyle, the girl with psychic abilities, is competent rather than chosen-one-ish, which is refreshing. The show cares about the small human details, the banter that comes from working in cramped quarters with people you rely on, the practicality of being broke and young and trying to solve supernatural crimes that no one else will touch. It looks good too, all gaslit streets and gothic architecture, without feeling like it's trying too hard.

Critics and audiences who found the show generally liked it. The complaint wasn't about quality but about Netflix canceling it almost immediately after it aired. One season is too little time to build the world Cornish has set up, especially when the show was clearly designed as something longer.

For viewers who watched Stranger Things and wanted something smaller and less interested in saving the world, this fits the bill. It's closer in spirit to the British supernatural adventures it's clearly drawing from, but it has enough charm to work even if you don't know the books it's based on. The cancellation stings because what was there worked.
