What is Jury Duty about?

Jury Duty is a prank show masquerading as a legal drama. Ronald Gladden, a real person selected for what he believes is an actual trial, spends eight episodes sitting in a courtroom with eleven actors, all following a script he cannot see. The case is fake. The witnesses are fake. The judge, the lawyers, the other jurors are all actors, except him. It's a high-concept prank that could have been insufferable but somehow works because Gladden is likable and visibly reactive, and because the show's creators resist the urge to humiliate him.

The comedy operates on a strange register. It's not laugh-track funny, and it rarely goes for absurdist shock. Instead, it finds humor in the mundane friction of jury deliberation: the small disagreements, the power plays, the way certain jurors dominate the room. James Marsden, playing an aggressively oblivious alternate juror, provides most of the intentional comedy, but the best moments come from watching Gladden navigate real social dynamics while the other jurors quietly nudge him toward conclusions they've been instructed to reach. There's something almost melancholy about it. Gladden is trying to be fair, to listen, to do his civic duty. The show respects that even as it plays tricks on him.

Critics were divided. Some found it a clever subversion of reality TV pranks, praising its restraint and Gladden's good nature. Others felt it was fundamentally mean-spirited, that deceiving someone for eight episodes in service of entertainment crosses a line, no matter how well-intentioned. Audiences on IMDb rated it highly, suggesting it found an audience willing to enjoy the conceit on its own terms. The show aired for one season in April 2023 and ended there.

It sits alone in its category because most prank shows either go for bigger laughs or darker twists. Jury Duty is quieter and more ambivalent than that. It's interested in the texture of group dynamics and social pressure, the way people convince themselves and each other. That's not a common thing to build a prank around, which is why it feels different from everything else doing something similar.
