If you want to understand why Houdini mattered beyond the handcuffs, this two-part drama offers a plausible answer: he was a performer who turned his own body and will into the primary illusion.

The tone is darker and more intimate than you might expect from a network known for truck auctions and pawn shops. Director Uli Edel brings the weight of prestige television to the material, staging elaborate escape sequences alongside quiet scenes of Houdini and his wife Bess drifting apart. The production moves between turn-of-the-century America and Europe with confidence, and the supporting cast (including Tim Pigott-Smith as a calculating British intelligence official) fills out a world where magic and espionage blur together in interesting ways. It is at its best when it ignores the impulse to make Houdini likable and simply watches him want.
