Director Kim Bo-tong and writer Han Jun-hee don't soften any of it. The show is angry in a way that feels earned rather than performed. It has the structure of a crime procedural, with Jung Hae-in as the principled MP Jun-ho and Koo Kyo-hwan as his cynical partner Ho-yeol forming a classic odd-couple dynamic, but it keeps dismantling that comfort by refusing easy answers. The deserters aren't always sympathetic. The officers aren't always villains. It's messier and harder than that.

Critics and audiences responded strongly to the first season's willingness to interrogate a system most Korean dramas treat as background. The show holds a solid 8.2 on IMDb and found enough viewership to justify a second season, though the second run split opinion more sharply, with some viewers finding the repetition of similar scenarios less urgent than the debut. Still, the series maintained its moral clarity throughout, never winking at the audience or pretending there's a clean resolution to what it's depicting.

D.P. doesn't hide what it's angry about, and it doesn't pretend that two well-meaning men can actually fix a broken system just by doing their jobs well. That refusal to offer false comfort, to let viewers off easy, is what separates it from most military dramas.

D.P. wrapped after two seasons and twelve episodes, concluding its story on its own terms rather than being forced off the air. The show, which followed Army deserters and their pursuers, had found a devoted audience on Netflix, earning strong reviews and an 8.2 rating on IMDb. But Netflix's approach to drama series has always been ruthlessly selective. The streamer greenlights shows expecting them to either become global hits or exit quickly, and D.P., while critically respected, never became the kind of phenomenon that justifies indefinite renewal at Netflix's premium production budgets.

Creator Cho Sung-woo and the cast likely saw the writing on the wall. Rather than watch the show limp toward cancellation, they chose to end it while the creative well still had water in it, after season two wrapped up the central conflicts. The show had covered its narrative ground thoroughly, following Park Sung-geun and Ahn Jun-ho through a complete arc of chasing and catching deserters, then deepening into the psychological cost of the job. There was nowhere obvious left to take the story without diminishing returns.

Netflix's economics reward completion over perpetuation anyway. Two solid seasons that tell a coherent story and generate goodwill are worth more to the platform than a third season that might divide fans or drop in quality. D.P. ended because it had said what it needed to say, and the platform was unlikely to fund a third round regardless.
