What is BoJack Horseman about?

BoJack Horseman is a show about a washed-up celebrity who happens to be a horse, set in a version of Hollywood where humans and anthropomorphic animals coexist without comment. That absurd premise is the coat of paint. Underneath it is one of the bleakest, most honest portraits of depression, self-destruction, and the particular damage done by people who know exactly what they're doing wrong and cannot stop doing it.

The tone is genuinely strange. Episodes that open with fast, silly wordplay and background sight gags can end somewhere that leaves you staring at the screen for a moment before moving on with your evening. The show earned real admiration for its formal experiments, particularly a nearly dialogue-free underwater episode and a real-time monologue episode late in the run that pushed against what animation as a format usually attempts. Will Arnett's voice performance is the load-bearing wall here. He plays BoJack with a kind of exhausted, self-aware cruelty that makes the character hard to like and nearly impossible to look away from.

Critics responded warmly, especially from the second season onward, once the show found its willingness to go somewhere genuinely dark rather than just gesturing at it. Audience scores have stayed high and the show has developed a devoted following, particularly among viewers who found it spoke to experiences of mental illness that television usually handles with more delicacy or distance.

The inevitable comparisons are to other prestige animations like Futurama or later-season Simpsons, but those comparisons don't quite fit. BoJack is not interested in jokes the way those shows are. Netflix gave the show room to develop over six seasons, which is a generous run for an animated drama that was genuinely unusual for the platform. The series never chased mainstream comfort, and while it built a devoted audience and earned strong critical respect, it was never going to be a numbers juggernaut. That was always fine, because the show's identity depended on not softening its edges. At some point, the creative team decided they had said what they came to say, and the final episodes bear that out. The last stretch of season six is clearly written as a conclusion, not a cliffhanger hoping for renewal.

There is a version of this story where a network pulls the plug on a show like this, but that does not appear to be what happened here. Bob-Waksberg has spoken publicly about the decision to end the show, framing it in terms of the story being complete. For a series so relentlessly honest about cycles of behavior and the limits of personal change, ending before overstaying its welcome was probably the most in-character thing it could do.
