What is Battlestar Galactica about?

Battlestar Galactica is the rare science fiction show that people who claim to hate science fiction end up watching obsessively. Ronald D. Moore's reimagining of the campy 1978 original strips away the fun costumes and replaces them with something rawer: a story about survival, complicity, and what people are willing to do when civilization is already ash. The setup is bleak from the first episode. Humanity is nearly wiped out, the survivors number in the tens of thousands, and the enemy looks exactly like us. The tone is military drama more than space opera. Handheld cameras, muted colors, the grinding tedium of a fleet running low on supplies. Edward James Olmos plays Commander Adama with the kind of controlled gravity that makes every rare moment of warmth land hard. Mary McDonnell as the civilian president is his equal, and their relationship, built on mutual necessity that slowly becomes something like trust, is the emotional core the show keeps returning to. Katee Sackhoff's Starbuck is a gender-swapped version of the original character and easily the most electric person onscreen, reckless and self-destructive in ways the show sometimes handles brilliantly and sometimes fumbles.

Critics received it as a prestige drama that happened to be on Syfy, which was not a sentence anyone expected to write in 2004. The show pulled strong reviews through its first two seasons and earned a Peabody Award, which felt genuinely surprising for cable science fiction at the time. Audience sentiment became more complicated in the later seasons, particularly the fourth, where the pace slowed and some of the show's bigger mysteries were resolved in ways that felt either resonant or like a cheat, depending on your tolerance for metaphysical ambiguity. The finale remains argued about today.

What holds up is the first two seasons' willingness to use the Cylon occupation storyline as a direct allegory for insurgency and occupation in a post-September 11 world, without making the parallel feel like homework. The show trusted viewers to sit with moral discomfort rather than resolve it neatly. That's still fairly rare.

Moore has been open about this, noting that the show had a destination in mind and that dragging it further would have diluted what made it work.

That said, the ratings picture was not entirely irrelevant. Viewership had declined from the highs of the early seasons, and by season four the audience had noticeably shrunk from the passionate crowd that had tuned in around 2005 and 2006.
