By January 2008, when the finale hit, the central conceit—teens competing in increasingly absurd challenges on an island—had been thoroughly exhausted. There was nowhere obvious left to take it without either repeating what had already worked or fundamentally reinventing the format.

The first season's rapid-fire episode schedule meant the show had to generate novelty constantly just to sustain viewer interest week to week. Cartoon Network's appetite for the series appears to have been real, but the network was also not convinced the premise could sustain a second season on the same channel, or at least not without a significant retooling.
