What is Schitt's Creek about?

Schitt's Creek begins as a fairly standard fish-out-of-water premise: a wealthy family loses everything and gets marooned in a backwater town they literally bought as a tax write-off. The Rose family, all four of them insufferable in their own particular ways, have to rebuild their lives in a motel they can barely afford, surrounded by locals they find baffling. That setup could have sustained a mean-spirited satire for a season or two, and early on it sometimes does feel like the joke is mostly at everyone's expense.

What the show becomes, though, is something warmer and more surprising. Dan Levy and Eugene Levy, writing and starring together, gradually shift the show's center of gravity from mockery toward something closer to genuine affection, without losing the comedy that got it there. Catherine O'Hara's Moira is the standout performance, an actress who has built an entire internal logic for a woman who speaks in an accent no one can place and treats every minor inconvenience as an aria. She is very funny in a way that is hard to describe precisely because O'Hara never tips her hand.

The show's reception follows an unusual arc. It ran quietly on CBC for its first several seasons, beloved in Canada and largely ignored elsewhere. Netflix picked it up, and the final season, which aired in 2020, became a cultural event, sweeping the comedy categories at the Emmys in a way that no comedy had done before. Whether the show quite deserved that level of critical and awards fervor is a fair question. It is a very good sitcom, occasionally a great one, but the Emmy sweep carried some of the intensity of a cause rather than a verdict.

What lingers is David and Patrick's relationship, handled with an unshowy matter-of-factness that made it notable for what it refused to do. There is no coming-out crisis, no tragedy, no lesson. Two people fall in love and the town accommodates them without comment, which turns out to be its own kind of statement.

The timing also made a certain sense. The show had found its massive American audience largely through Netflix, which introduced it to viewers well after CBC had been airing it in Canada. By the time Season 6 aired in early 2020, the show was experiencing a surge in popularity rather than a decline. Ending it there meant going out while people still wanted more, which is almost always the right instinct.

There's no cancellation story here, no ratings collapse or network dispute to untangle. The Levys built something with a specific shape, told the story they wanted to tell about a wealthy family stripped of everything learning to genuinely care for one another, and then stopped. The final season even won a sweep of the major Emmy comedy categories, which is an unusual kind of punctuation for a finale. It ended because it was finished, not because anyone forced the issue.
