What is RIPLEY about?

Ripley is a portrait of a con man discovering that deception comes easier to him than connection. Andrew Scott plays Tom Ripley, a drifter scraping by in 1950s New York until a wealthy businessman offers him passage to Italy and a generous sum to retrieve his wayward son. What begins as a straightforward con becomes something stranger and more dangerous as Ripley insinuates himself into the life of Dickie Greenleaf, the beautiful, reckless heir he's meant to retrieve. The show takes its time letting you watch Ripley figure out who he can pretend to be, and the pleasure (and horror) of finding that he's actually good at it.

Steven Zaillian directs all eight episodes in a series shot almost entirely in black and white, which sounds like an affectation but isn't. The monochrome palette makes the 1960s setting feel less like nostalgia and more like documentary footage from a moral netherworld. Conversations happen in long takes. Violence arrives suddenly. The show has little interest in the heist-movie mechanics you might expect from a Ripley story. Instead it studies the psychology of someone learning that he can kill a man and then calmly explain away his absence to their mutual friends. Scott delivers a performance of almost perfect blankness, a face that reflects whatever emotion the moment requires and nothing more.

Critics and audiences responded to the show's craftsmanship and Scott's unsettling restraint, though opinion split on whether the premise sustains eight hours. The show arrived as a prestige event during a season when Netflix's high-profile dramas were either overstuffed or underbaked, and Ripley landed somewhere that felt genuinely confident. It generated considerable discussion, though not all of it was praise. Some found the pacing glacial and the inevitability of Ripley's downward spiral, once set in motion, too predetermined to sustain interest across a full season.

The material has been adapted before, most memorably in the 1990s Anthony Minghella film, but Zaillian's version isn't competing with that legacy so much as abandoning the romance entirely. Where Minghella found tragedy in Ripley's hunger for a life he couldn't have, this series finds something colder: the story of a man who discovers he has no self to begin with, only an appetite and the talent to wear whatever face the world needs to see.

Ripley was designed as a limited series from the start, a self-contained adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's novel starring Andrew Scott. Netflix released all eight episodes at once in April 2024, giving the story a clean beginning and end without leaving threads for continuation. The show had no plan to return because it wasn't built as an ongoing drama. It told one complete narrative arc and concluded it.

The critical reception was strong enough that Netflix could have theorized about a follow-up, but that wasn't the strategy here. Ripley succeeded on its own terms as a prestige limited series, the kind of project designed to land on the platform, draw viewers and acclaim, and finish. With an 8.1 rating on IMDb and substantial cultural attention, the show ended precisely when it meant to, not because of poor performance or network interference. It was always meant to be eight episodes, not the beginning of something longer.
