What is Rick and Morty about?
Rick and Morty started as an absurdist riff on Back to the Future and became one of the most genuinely inventive animated comedies of the past decade. The premise is simple enough: a brilliant, alcoholic, deeply unpleasant grandfather pulls his anxious teenage grandson through portals into increasingly dangerous corners of the universe. What the show does with that setup is rarely simple at all.
At its best, it smuggles real philosophical weight into episodes about sentient car batteries or alien theme parks. The comedy is fast and layered, rewarding close attention without demanding it, and the show has a genuine interest in nihilism that feels earned rather than performed. Early seasons in particular are extraordinarily good at making you laugh and then quietly unsettling you before the credits roll. The tone is cynical but not cold, and the family dynamics, as ridiculous as they get, give the chaos something to push against.
The show carries a 9 out of 10 on IMDb from nearly 700,000 votes, which puts it in rare company, and critical reception through its early run was enthusiastic. Later seasons grew more divisive, partly because the fandom had become so loud and possessive that almost any creative choice felt like a provocation. The recasting of the lead roles, with Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden replacing Justin Roiland as Rick and Morty after season six, was handled better than many expected, though it remains an adjustment.
Nine seasons in, the show is still capable of a great episode. It has also, occasionally, produced episodes that feel like they were generated by an algorithm trained on the show's own greatest hits. The gap between those two modes is wider than it used to be, which is what happens when a cult property becomes a phenomenon. The version of Rick and Morty that made people evangelical about it is still in there, surfacing often enough to justify keeping up with it.
