That they become inseparable, with Wakana sewing elaborate cosplay costumes so Marin can embody her favorite anime characters, sounds like a fairly standard odd-couple romance setup. What the show does with it is a bit more interesting than that.

The tone is warm almost to a fault, but it earns its sweetness by taking both characters' passions seriously. Wakana's sewing and doll-making are treated with genuine craft-nerd detail, and Marin's love of trashy eroge characters is played without mockery or embarrassment. The show is openly comfortable with Marin's sexuality in ways that anime romance often fumbles badly, and it helps that neither lead is written as dense about their own feelings for very long. The result is a romance that moves, which is rarer than it should be.
