Pedro Alonso's Berlin is the show's most interesting creation, a charming sociopath whose moral ugliness the show asks you to sit with in complicated ways. The first two parts, which wrap up the original Mint story, are tighter and more confident than what follows. The later seasons, set around a heist on the Bank of Spain, stretch the concept past its natural limits, and the show becomes visibly strained trying to sustain tension across too many episodes.

Critics were divided. European reviewers appreciated the political dimension, the robbers as folk heroes stealing from institutions, the red overalls as a symbol of resistance. Audiences, especially outside Spain, embraced it with genuine fervor, making it one of Netflix's most-watched non-English series at the time of its peak. Some critics found the politics more aesthetic than substantive, a stylish veneer rather than real critique.

If you've exhausted Ozark and Dark and want something looser and more emotionally operatic, this fits that space. It is a show that rewards a certain willingness to surrender to its own ridiculousness, and the early episodes, when everything still feels like it could go sideways at any moment, have a propulsive energy that very few crime dramas manage to sustain even briefly.

Creator Álex Pina had a story he wanted to tell, and the final part of Season 5, which aired in December 2021, was always framed as the planned conclusion to the Professor's saga. This wasn't a cancellation dressed up as a finale. The creative team closed out the narrative on their own terms.

Part of what made ending feel right was the sheer scale the show had reached. By its final seasons, Money Heist was drawing enormous global viewership and had become something of a cultural phenomenon, with the red jumpsuit and Dalí mask turning into recognizable symbols well beyond Spain. Sustaining that momentum indefinitely would have been difficult, and stretching the story further risked diminishing what made it work. The later seasons, set during the Bank of Spain heist, were already longer and more sprawling than the original Mint storyline, and there's an argument that the show was testing the limits of its own premise.

Netflix has since moved forward with spinoffs, including Berlin, which launched in 2023, so the broader universe isn't closed. But the original run ended because Pina and his team had reached the natural stopping point of their story. That's genuinely not that common in streaming, where the incentive is usually to keep a successful show going as long as possible. Money Heist is one of the cases where the ending was a choice, not a circumstance.
