Lupin takes the DNA of Maurice Leblanc's classic French gentleman thief and threads it through a modern revenge fantasy, one where the hero is a Black man in contemporary Paris systematically dismantling the empire of a corrupt billionaire. Omar Sy carries the entire enterprise on his shoulders with ease, playing Assane Diop as charming and clever enough to talk his way into sealed rooms and steal priceless artifacts, but also wounded in ways that matter. The show works because it understands that a good heist isn't really about the heist; it's about watching someone outsmart people who have always assumed they were the smartest ones in the room.

The tone shifts between playful caper (Assane in disguise, outrunning Parisian police through the metro) and genuine emotional stakes. The early episodes nail this balance, though the show becomes increasingly reliant on coincidence and convenient plot mechanics as it stretches across three seasons. There's something both satisfying and hollow about watching the same wealthy family crumble through elaborate schemes that feel less like the product of careful planning and more like narrative momentum. Still, the show has style. It moves fast, it knows when to linger on a con's emotional payoff, and Sy is magnetic enough that you stay invested even when the writing starts circling.

Audiences embraced it immediately. Lupin became one of Netflix's biggest hits globally, partly because its central conceit is universally appealing (watching the rich get robbed never gets old) and partly because Sy's performance radiates intelligence and restraint. Critics were more divided, praising the first season's snappiness while noting that the show doesn't deepen so much as repeat itself. By the third season, the formula had worn thin for many reviewers, though the audience remained loyal. The show occupies a specific sweet spot: too plot-driven to be considered serious drama, too earnest about its revenge narrative to be pure entertainment, but charismatic enough that it doesn't really need to justify itself.

What distinguishes Lupin from other streaming heist shows is its lack of cynicism. Assane isn't in it for the money or the thrill.
