The supernatural action, involving Sacred Gears and battles between devils, fallen angels, and the Church, is genuinely developed across its four seasons, but anyone coming to this show primarily for the mythology is probably fooling themselves about their reasons.

The tone is loud, horny, and frequently funny. What keeps it watchable beyond its obvious appeal is that the action choreography has real energy and the supporting cast, particularly Akeno and the grudgingly affectionate Koneko, are given enough character to feel like more than set dressing. Yuki Kaji plays Issei with an earnest goofiness that prevents him from being completely insufferable, which is no small achievement given the role. The show is unambiguous about what it prioritizes, and there is something almost refreshing about that honesty.

Audiences received it warmly, and its 7.5 on IMDb across a decent sample reflects a fanbase that stayed loyal through all four seasons. Critics of the serious variety mostly ignored it, which is appropriate. It ran on AT-X, a Japanese late-night channel that airs content with a specific adult audience in mind, and the show fits that context perfectly.

Compared to other harem action series, DxD has more narrative follow-through than most. The mythology around the Underworld and the various devil factions accumulates into something with actual stakes by later seasons. It is still fundamentally a power fantasy wrapped in fan service, but it is one that bothered to build a world around itself.
