The premise sounds like a straightforward survival-action setup: condemned criminals sent to a lethal supernatural island to retrieve an immortality elixir for the shogunate, each paired with an executioner who is supposed to kill them if they step out of line. But the show is genuinely interested in what these people want and why, which separates it from the wave of dark fantasy anime that mistake bleakness for depth.

The island itself is the show's strangest achievement. Horan is visually grotesque and deeply weird, somewhere between a Buddhist fever dream and body-horror nightmare, with flora and fauna that follow rules the characters have to figure out under pressure. The adaptation, produced by MAPPA, leans hard into the color palette and the biological strangeness of Yuji Kaku's source manga. It earns most of its action sequences because the fights have stakes that shift as the characters learn more about what the island actually is.

Critical reception was strong, with viewers and reviewers praising the visual work and the central dynamic between Gabimaru and the executioner Sagiri, voiced with real restraint by Yumiri Hanamori. Sagiri is the show's moral center in a cast full of people who mostly lack one, and the series is smart enough to let her uncertainty and growth carry genuine weight. The IMDb score reflects a satisfied audience, not a fanatical one, which feels accurate: this is a show that delivers on its promises without much waste.

The 25-episode run across what amounted to two cours gives Hell's Paradise room that many comparable adaptations do not get. The pacing in the middle stretch tests patience in places, and some of the supporting criminal-executioner pairs get less development than they deserve. But the final stretch earns the time spent, and Gabimaru's emotional arc lands in a way that feels specific rather than generic. The show knew what it was trying to say about survival and selfhood, and it mostly said it.

TV Tokyo and the production team were essentially working from a blueprint. The manga concluded its run in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2021, so there was never a realistic scenario where the anime would outpace or extend beyond what existed in print. The 8.1 on IMDb suggests the show held genuine audience appreciation throughout its run, but strong ratings don't create more story where none exists. This wasn't a case of a network losing interest or a streamer pulling the plug mid-run.

By March 2026 the anime had done what it set out to do: bring Gabimaru, Sagiri, and the rest through the complete arc of Shinsenkyo and out the other side. Shows like this end not because something went wrong but because something went right. The story was told.
