Predictive Logic Analysis

Frequency has been cancelled. The series will not continue, and Season 2 is not in development.

What is Frequency about?

Frequency hinges on a premise that sounds like a gimmick but works because the show takes it seriously. Raimy, a detective in 2016, makes contact with her father Frank through a restored ham radio, and he's calling from 1996, two decades before she was born. The hook is real: they can share information across time, which means Frank can warn Raimy about crimes before they happen, and Raimy can tell Frank things that change his past. It's the kind of setup that could fall apart in five minutes if anyone involved wasn't committed to the emotional stakes underneath the time-travel logic. The show manages to keep both the mystery and the family drama humming along for its brief run, treating the radio contact as something genuinely strange and emotionally taxing rather than a convenient plot device.

What makes Frequency work is its willingness to let consequences pile up. When Raimy and Frank change the past, it doesn't just solve one crime. It creates new problems, undoes relationships, puts people in danger they weren't in before. The show understands that a time-travel tool with good intentions is still dangerous. That tension, combined with the fact that Raimy never quite knew her father and Frank is meeting his daughter as an adult he can't see, gives the procedural elements actual weight. The tone is darker than typical CW fare without being aggressively grim.

Audiences and critics alike found the core concept engaging enough to keep watching, with an IMDb score of 7.4 that suggests solid word-of-mouth. The problem was timing and network fit. Frequency arrived on the CW, a network better known for vampire romance and superhero spectacle, with a serialized mystery that demanded attention and didn't have obvious merchandising appeal. It lasted thirteen episodes before cancellation.

In the landscape of time-travel TV, Frequency sits apart from the typical "fix the timeline" stories because it's not interested in one grand solution. The best episodes understand that changing the past is messy and that a parent and child communicating across decades, even with the best intentions, might not always make things better. That's a harder show to sustain than most networks are willing to risk.

Why was Frequency cancelled?

Frequency arrived on The CW with a promising premise: a father and daughter separated by decades, communicating through a ham radio that somehow bridges past and present. The show had solid bones, decent performances, and a devoted audience that gave it a 7.4 rating on IMDb. But none of that mattered much when the numbers came in for broadcast television in the fall of 2016. The CW has always operated on tighter margins than its larger network competitors, and Frequency's ratings dropped sharply after its debut episode. By the time it wrapped its thirteen-episode first season in January 2017, the show had already become a casualty of changing viewing habits and the network's need to program for an audience that was increasingly fracturing across platforms.

The timing worked against the show, too. It premiered during a season when streaming services were starting to seriously cannibalize live television viewership, and a sci-fi show about time and communication needed a certain level of audience commitment and week-to-week engagement. The CW stuck with Frequency long enough to let it finish its first season's story arc, a courtesy they don't always extend, but the network had little incentive to bet on a second season when the ratings trajectory was unmistakable. Sometimes a show with real merit simply arrives at the wrong moment, in the wrong slot, for the wrong audience at the right time to click something else.
