What is Frequency about?

Frequency asks what you'd do if you could talk to a dead parent and change the past. Raimy, a detective in 2016, hears her father Frank crackling through an old ham radio, alive and twenty years younger on the other end. The premise is a genuine hook: they can warn each other about dangers, solve crimes together across two decades, try to prevent his death. It's the kind of time-travel setup that works best when you're thinking about it rather than watching it happen.

The show commits to its emotional core. The relationship between Raimy and Frank carries real weight, anchored by solid performances from Peyton List and Riley Smith. The writing respects the idea that changing the past creates immediate consequences in the present. Every call between them matters because they're both racing to prevent a tragedy, and the show doesn't shy away from the fact that saving someone's life means potentially erasing others. There's genuine tension in that moral knot, and the mystery of who really killed Frank keeps moving forward.

Frequency landed with decent audience interest and reasonable reviews, but The CW cancelled it after one season despite that 7.4 IMDb score. Thirteen episodes is too short to build sustained momentum on a concept like this, and the show struggled to maintain steam once the initial premise wore off. It didn't have the pop-culture durability of Supernatural or Arrow, the shows that defined The CW's sci-fi drama lane. There's a sense watching it that the writers had mapped out a bigger story than a single season could contain.

What makes Frequency live or die for you depends on patience with time-travel logic. If you can accept the rules it sets and care about whether Frank survives, you'll be satisfied by its arc. If you need the mythology to feel airtight or you want more sprawl in the storytelling, thirteen episodes will feel rushed.

Frequency arrived on The CW with a promising premise: a father and daughter separated by decades, communicating through a ham radio that somehow bridges past and present. The show had solid bones, decent performances, and a devoted audience that gave it a 7.4 rating on IMDb. But none of that mattered much when the numbers came in for broadcast television in the fall of 2016. The CW has always operated on tighter margins than its larger network competitors, and Frequency's ratings dropped sharply after its debut episode. By the time it wrapped its thirteen-episode first season in January 2017, the show had already become a casualty of changing viewing habits and the network's need to program for an audience that was increasingly fracturing across platforms.

The timing worked against the show, too. It premiered during a season when streaming services were starting to seriously cannibalize live television viewership, and a sci-fi show about time and communication needed a certain level of audience commitment and week-to-week engagement. The CW stuck with Frequency long enough to let it finish its first season's story arc, a courtesy they don't always extend, but the network had little incentive to bet on a second season when the ratings trajectory was unmistakable.
