Hajime no Ippo, released internationally as Fighting Spirit, is a boxing anime that has been running in various seasons since 2000, and it earns its reputation the hard way: by making you care about a shy, soft-spoken kid who gets punched in the face for a living. Ippo Makunouchi starts out as one of the more pitiable protagonists in sports anime, a bullied teenager who smells like fish and has no social life to speak of. The show's entire engine runs on watching him become something else without ever losing what made him sympathetic in the first place.

The tone is an unusual mix. There are long stretches of training-montage earnestness, locker-room comedy involving Ippo's gym mates, and then bouts that are choreographed and paced with enough tension to make a three-minute round feel exhausting. The fundamental constraint was always the manga itself. Morikawa is notoriously deliberate in his output, and the gaps between anime seasons reflected the reality that there wasn't always enough new material to sustain another cour without padding or filler, which the production team seemed reluctant to do.
