What is Dynasty about?

Dynasty is a soap opera built on the premise that watching very rich people hurt each other is inherently entertaining, and for five seasons it committed to that premise with the kind of shamelessness that actually works. The show centers on Fallon Carrington, a woman so determined to control her family's oil empire that she treats business sabotage as a love language, and her father Blake, who views his children as both heirs and adversaries. When Blake marries Cristal, a woman from outside their world, the show finds its actual engine: the collision between old money entitlement and someone trying to survive inside a family that treats betrayal as tradition.

The tone swings wildly, and that is the point. One scene plays as family tragedy, the next as high camp, the next as something close to a thriller, sometimes all at once. Elizabeth Gillies brings a particular kind of energy to Fallon, all sharp delivery and barely suppressed rage, and the show learned to lean into her as its anchor. The plotting is often absurd. Characters return from the dead. Villains become heroes become villains again. There is a real pleasure in the show's willingness to abandon any pretense of subtle character development in favor of "what if we just made her evil this season," and the cast generally seems to understand the assignment.

Critics were divided, mostly because they could not quite decide whether Dynasty was self-aware or just reckless. Audiences who wanted campy fun found it. Those expecting serious drama about wealth and power got something messier and less coherent. The show built a real following even as reviewers dismissed it, which is not unusual for soap operas, where critical dismissal and audience engagement often exist in separate universes.
