These characters work because they're allowed to be both comic and contemptible without being softened.

The critical response was mixed. Viewers and critics acknowledged the cast's commitment and the visual intelligence of the production, but some felt the six-episode run simply couldn't contain everything the novel contains. The pacing felt rushed to many, and condensing Heller's sprawling narrative meant losing texture and the slow burn of accumulated madness that makes the book so disorienting. A single season left the show feeling incomplete, less an adaptation than an ambitious outline.

The series had done what it set out to do.
