What is A Korean Odyssey about?

A Korean Odyssey takes the Journey to the West legend and drops it into modern Seoul, where a immortal monkey demon named Son O-gong has spent centuries pursuing power and invulnerability. His scheme goes sideways when he encounters Jin Seon-mi, a woman cursed to see spirits and monsters that no one else can perceive. She ends up controlling him through a magical orb, forcing this selfish, otherworldly being into her orbit whether he likes it or not. It's a premise built on friction, which the show milks for both comedy and genuine stakes.

The tone is deliberately uneven. The series hops between broad comedy (O-gong's indignation at being bound to a mortal woman, slapstick encounters with lesser demons) and darker fantasy elements that emerge as the season progresses. Lee Seung-gi leans into the comedic aspects of playing an ancient creature trapped in a modern world, all petulance and hunger. The show doesn't always balance these tones smoothly, and when it shifts toward mythology and cosmic stakes, the lighter moments can feel out of place.
