What is The Mist about?

The Mist tries to do something ambitious: blend a locked-room mystery with cosmic horror, asking how ordinary people fracture under pressure when both external threats and internal suspicions close in. A crime rocks a small town, then fog descends and traps everyone inside it, making it impossible to tell what's a real danger and what's just fear and paranoia. It's a premise with real potential for tension, especially if you're drawn to stories about communities turning on themselves.

But the show struggles with focus. It wants to explore the Copeland family's trauma, multiple other perspectives trapped in different locations, the mystery of the crime itself, and whatever supernatural threat the mist represents. That's too much for ten episodes, and the result feels scattered. Some plot threads vanish for multiple episodes. Characters make decisions that don't follow from what we know about them. The horror elements, when they appear, feel disconnected from the human drama rather than deepening it.

Critics and viewers largely agreed the show didn't work, and it was cancelled after a single season. The IMDb score sits below 5.5, which is rarely a sign audiences found much to recommend. There's a sense that Spike didn't know what it had made, and neither did viewers trying to figure out if they were watching a crime drama, a survival thriller, or something else entirely.

What makes The Mist unfortunate rather than contemptible is that it has good actors and individual moments that land, but they're scattered across an unfocused narrative that seems to change priorities every few episodes.
