What is Harrow about?

Ioan Gruffudd carries Harrow as an arrogant forensic pathologist with too many skeletons in his filing cabinets. The show wraps itself around his attempts to solve murders while concealing a personal secret that could destroy everything, a central tension that mostly works because Gruffudd plays the character's chaos with genuine conviction. He is clever enough to find things in corpses that others miss, reckless enough to contaminate evidence if it suits him, and brittle enough that you sense the whole structure could collapse at any moment.

What makes the show tick is less the weekly cases (though they are competent puzzles) and more the constant pressure on Harrow himself. The tone is darker than typical procedural television. It focuses on what people will do to protect themselves rather than on the satisfaction of resolution. The show doesn't shy away from his moral compromises, and it doesn't always let him win. The supporting cast is solid without being exceptional. There's real chemistry between Harrow and his colleague Grace, and the professional rivalries feel earned.

Audiences and critics gave it a qualified welcome. It found a solid international audience, particularly in Australia and the UK, though it never became a phenomenon. Most reviews acknowledged that the show worked as a vehicle for Gruffudd and that the procedural elements were well-crafted, but noted that it sometimes struggles when the case of the week pulls focus from Harrow's personal unraveling. The show ran for three seasons before ending in 2021, which is respectable television life.

Harrow doesn't reinvent the crime drama, and it isn't as polished as the major American procedurals or as audacious as prestige cable shows. What it does is commit fully to the idea that the smartest person in a room can also be the most compromised, and it builds watchable television around that contradiction. If you like character-driven mysteries where the detective is part of the problem, it's worth your time.
