Echo Point was Network Ten's bold attempt to capture the primetime soap audience that Seven Network's Home and Away had dominated throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s. The series centered on interconnected families and young people navigating life in a coastal community, anchored by a compelling mystery: the resurrection of a long-dormant local murder case that promised to unravel secrets woven through the town's fabric. It was conventional soap opera territory, but with the kind of high-stakes dramatic engine that networks believed could draw viewers away from an established competitor.

The show embodied the Australian soap opera aesthetic of its era—ensemble-driven storytelling with youthful protagonists, domestic entanglements, and a mystery-box narrative designed to sustain viewer investment across multiple episodes. It boasted a solid cast that included Martin Henderson, who brought name recognition from his Shortland Street work, alongside Jessica Napier, Kimberly Davenport, and veteran character actor Allan Lovell. The formula was familiar by 1995, executed with the production values and narrative ambitions that had made Home and Away a phenomenon.

Yet Echo Point's run proved brutally short. Launched at 7:00pm on weeknights in June 1995, the series hemorrhaged viewers and never recovered. After little more than 100 episodes, Network Ten moved the remaining installments into a late-night 11:30pm graveyard slot—a death knell that effectively signaled the show's already-sealed fate. By December 1995, just six months after its premiere, Echo Point was gone. The show found only marginal international interest, picked up sporadically by Central Television in the UK and briefly by TV3 in New Zealand, both markets that quickly abandoned it.
