What is Babylon Berlin about?

Babylon Berlin is a German crime drama that uses 1920s Berlin as more than just a setting. The city itself becomes a character, with all its wealth and squalor, artistic freedom and political violence happening in the same blocks. You watch it for the detective work, yes, but mostly for the texture of a place at a hinge point in history. Gereon Rath, a police investigator transferred from Cologne, moves through cabarets and gang territories and government offices where power is shifting in ways everyone can feel but no one fully understands yet.

The show has a visual language that matches its ambition. It's glossy and meticulous in a way that feels earned rather than showy, with costumes and set design that don't just look period-accurate but convey class, desperation, and moral compromise in the same frame. Tom Tykwer and his co-creators build mysteries that spiral outward into larger questions about corruption, sexuality, and what happens when a society becomes unstable. The tone moves between noir procedural and something closer to tragic tragedy, where characters you've come to care about get caught in systems larger than their own choices.

Critics and audiences embraced it. The show maintains a strong rating on IMDb and attracted serious attention as ambitious European television, which was less common when it debuted in 2017. It has found a steady international audience even as it remained rooted in German production and language.

Babylon Berlin doesn't quite fit with typical crime dramas because the case details matter less than the moral and historical vertigo the show creates. It's closer in spirit to shows that use crime as a lens for examining systems and eras, but it commits more fully to the texture of daily life in a specific time and place than most of its peers.
